Tour of the Dragon MTB 2019

Bhutan's annual mountain biking event Tour of the Dragon 10th edition will start in Bumthang on Saturday, September 7th, 2019, 2:00 AM and travels 268 km over 4 mountain passes before finishing in Thimphu town square. Reputedly it is one of the toughest one-day mountain bike races in the world. 

 

HRH Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck will grant an audience to participants of this competition on September 5th.

 

 

Registration fees are set at :- National Registration Fee : Nu. 7,000/-,  SAARC Registration Fee : USD 165/-, Expat Registration Fee           : USD 165/- and International Registration Fee: USD 250/-.

 

Last year the TOD took place on 01 September 2018; the event was won by Aaron Bayard from US who recorded the best time at 11hrs and 11mins since 2015.  Following him 50 minutes later was Norbu, a local biker winning 2nd spot. He clocked at 12hrs and 3mins. The 3rd spot was Tashi Namgyal clocking at 12hrs and 15mins.  A total of 48 bikers, seven from US, six from India and four from UK participated in the ultra marathon mountain biking race organised by Bhutan Olympic Committee.

 

Rinchen Dema, 23, was the only Bhutanese women to compete in the race to date, she also participated in the race in 2017.

 

Chimi Dema and Jonathan Redman defended Dragon’s Fury title in another biking competition held on the same day; the reigning champions Jonathan Redman from Australia in senior men category and Chimi Dema in senior women category defended their titles. Chimi Dema has won Dragon’s Fury thrice in the senior women category.  Six women riders took part in the race and two were foreigners. 

 

A total 68 bikers took part in Dragon’s Fury – 35 in senior men category, 26 in junior boys, six in senior women, and a lone participant in the junior girls’ category.  Completing the race in 2hrs 34mins, Tenzin Namgay won in the junior boys’ category and Binesh Thapa followed at 2hrs 52mins.

 

Tenzin Wangmo, the lone participant in the junior girls’ category, finished at 5hrs 26mins bettering last years timing by 28mins.

 

The 60km race flagged off from Punakha at 10 am on Sunday.  More than 100 local and international bikers participated in two separate events - Tour of the Dragon and Dragon’s Fury on the same day.
