Duration: 16 Days

Trip Grade: three star

JOURNEY TO MT KAILASH

This sacred mountain and abode of the Hindu God Shiva and for the Buddhist Mount Meeru Center of the Universe is one of the world’s greatest pilgrimage destinations.  Visited only at one time by the locals dedicated and hardy enough.

This is an area of sweeping beauty and awesome landscapes.  The blue Lake Manasarovar is revered as a holy site and is surrounded by cave monasteries all around its rim.  Most of the days the drives are long and camping is outdoors.  The road is wild crossing streams, high snow covered passes, dusty mud trails and vast plains of the Changtang reserve.  Often herds of antelope, wild ass and yak are seen foraging in the alpine meadows. Tibetan nomads ride yaks and horses.  Many pilgrims move forward by postrating  themselves hundreds of kms to reach and circumambulate the sacred mountain to gain merit.

It is a journey for the adventurous with basic comforts and an experience few people will ever forget.  There are options to visit Toling and Tsaparang to see the ruins of the ancient Guge Kingdom.  Also the northern route through Ali can be used to travel to Darchen the base of the Kailash trek.  The road journey exits out via Lake Paiko Tso to the border town of Zhangmu.
