Duration: 8 Days

Trip Grade: two star

A cruise on the mighty Brahmaputra a river rising from the distant headwaters of the Tibet highlands. Visit two national parks, a village on the banks accessible only from the river where no four-wheeler has ever gone, market place and local bazaars are but a few attractions in this 7 nights cruise. Moving upstream from the city of Guwahati discover the wilderness and vastness of this great river.

Day 1 : Arrive Guwahati and before embarking on the cruise boat at Bir Lachit visit the holy Kamakhya temple situated atop Nilachal Hill one of the most important ‘shakti’ or tantric temples of India. There is a small but neatly maintained World War II  Commonwealth War Graves cemetery in the city which will be visited and then on to the vessel.  Sail upstream till dusk and moor on the north bank.

Day 2 : Sail most part of the day, enjoying the views on this vast river with small boats going about transporting people and goods, going past low hills and reach Ganesh Pahar the Hill of Lord Ganesha; pay obeisance to the rock cut figure of Lord Ganesha, local legend has it that this deity protects all those that sail past. Disembark and walk through a village which has not seen a four wheeler as there are no roads to let one enter it.  Visit the rock cut figure of Lord Ganesha a simple though holy shrine.

Day 3 : Early risers may view the great Himalayas in the distance towards the north. Another day of great views from the deck sailing most of the day, break voyage by visiting a bankside village. Stop for the night mooring at a sand bank.

Day 4 : Early start today as the cruise enters a side channel and sail some distance to land at the Orang National Park. Look out for the Himalayas to the north. This area is a good to spot the rare fresh water dolphins. Enjoy a jeep safari in this rarely visited park, home to the rhino, deer, elephants and many bird species. Return to Bir Lachit, continue sailing upstream till dusk.

Please note : if there is no navigable channel in  this area, the cruise will sail on to Tezpur and visit Nameri National Park instead of Orang National Park. Options are nature hike and rafting in Nameri National Park.

Day 5 : Continue sailing upstream to land at Tezpur. Visit Cole Park with stone carvings from the 11-12th Century AD. From here drive a short distance to the 6th century temple ruins of Da Parbatia with an ornate carved doorway.  Ride cycle rickshaws through the bazaars of Tezpur and return to Bir Lachit.

Option to disembark at Tezpur today to make it a 4 nights / 5 day itinerary.

Day 6 : Continue upstream and sail under the long bridge, moor at Silghat on the slopes of low hills covered with teak wood plantations. If time permits take a walk between the river and the hills a natures paradise with butterflies in their thousands, visit an old cave temple. In the afternoon drive out to Kaziranga National Park. Enjoy a jeep safari inside Kaziranga a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best places in the world to see the Indian One-horned rhinoceros, wild elephant, deer, “mithun” wild buffalo and birds make this park an amazing wildlife experience.

Day 7 : Early day to board vehicles for drive of about an hour to Kaziranga’s Central Range for an elephant safari; view rhinos and other wildlife. At noon stroll through a village inhabited by the ethnic Mising tribe and walk along a tea estate path before lunch at a lodge. Afternoon ride open jeeps through the little visited Eastern Range before returning to the cruise boat.

Day 8 : Disembark and drive 5 hours to Guwahati airport or 2 ½ hr transfer to Jorhat airport.
