Calcutta

Duration: 6 Days

Trip Grade: one star

Calcutta "City of Joy" now renamed as Kolkata is a fascinating destination to experience its rich historical and cultural heritages; the legacy of its colonial past and modern times juxtapose and collide in an exciting mix of old and new. The city never fails to surprise a visitor and merits a week long tour as there are so many sights to see and experiences to savour.

Tour the magnificent Victoria Memorial, the artistic beauty of clay images of Kumartoli, the simple yet serene resting place of Mother Theresa, splashes of vibrant colors in the Flower Market to name a few sights that will etch happy memories of a unique destination. It is now India's second largest city and the country’s undisputed intellectual and cultural capital.

Kolkata is also the gateway to north east India's “hill stations” home to the famous tea growing areas of Darjeeling, former kingdom of Sikkim and the quaint trading town of Kalimpong which can be combined with an overland journey to the mystic kingdom of Bhutan.

Day 1 : Arrive Kolkata

On arrival at Kolkata Airport you will be met by our representative and transferred by private vehicle to the hotel of your choice. The city offers many experiences of museums, historical Victorian buildings and much more.

Day 2 : Kolkata

Today’s tour will take you to the Jain Temple, Zoological Gardens and Victoria Memorial. Keep your eyes open as you will also pass Howrah Bridge, Dalhousie Square, Fort Williams, Secretariat Buildings and Old Court House Street. The afternoon’s Hooghly cruise is a leisurely trip along the River Ganges. Soak up the views of the banks, the symbolic Howrah Bridge and Second Hooghly Bridge. Enjoy a multi hued sunset from the comfort of your cruise ship.

Day 3 : Kolkata

This morning you will visit the Mother Teresa's Home. Learn all about "Mother" who founded the "Missionaries of Charity" order. She was acclaimed for her work with the "poorest of the poor" giving them hope, love and a home.  Later visit Marble Palace a repository of artefacts collected by a trader during colonial times.  A fascinating look into life in that period.  If time permits we shall also visit College Street to browse through the world's largest market of second hand books.

Day 4 : Kolkata

We will visit the home of Bengal's most celebrated sons Rabindranath Tagore. A look into the life and literary works of this Nobel laureate who was largely self schooled and went on to become a leading light of his time. Visit the Kali temple on the banks of the Hoogly, a highly venerated pilgrimage site.  Later a tour to Belurmath the most important of the Rama Krishna mission centers; on arrival visitors are struck by the all encompassing serenity of this place.

Day 5 : Kolkata

A leisurely and fun day compared to the schedules of the previous days. We will enjoy a "Electric Tram" ride in air conditioned comfort through the bylanes of this sprawling city and savour a typical Bengali lunch as we glide through absorbing the sights and sounds of this vibrant metropolis. For diversity those who like to try out other local cuisine, a visit can be arranged to Tangra where family owned restaurants serve delicious Chinese meals.

Day 6 : Kolkata departure

Transfer to airport for your departure to other destinations in India and Bhutan.

Check for extensions to Darjeeling, Sikkim & Kalimpong and Bhutan compatible with this itinerary.
