Ladakh Trek

Trip Grade: three star

The Ladakh trek is a journey to a Buddhist culture in the Indian Himalayas. Being in the rain shadow area this region is best trekked in the May – September window where long days and favourable weather makes it a good destination to visit. A region steeped in Buddhist culture, scenery and culture very similar to Tibet it is an area of great beauty and steeped in ancient traditions.

 

Day 01 : Delhi – Leh

Arrive at Leh 3524m from Delhi. Transfer to hotel. Whole day is free to acclimatize well in the high altitudes. Overnight in hotel.

 

Day 02 : Leh touring

Full day sightseeing of Shay palace, Thiksey and Hemis monasteries. Overnight in hotel.

 

Shey - Until the 16th century it was the royal residence, Kings of Leh were supposed to be born in the monasteries. This Palace Monastery has the largest statue of Maître Buddha (Buddha to come) in Ladakh erected in the mid 17th century.

 

Thiksey -  is an imposing monastery and one of the finest example of Ladakhi architecture and forms part of Gelukpa order.

 

Hemis Monastery - Is one of the richest, biggest and most famous gompa in Ladakh. Built in 1630, it belongs to the red sect. The monastery houses silver chortens studded with precious and semi precious stones, an impressive library of Tibetan style books, large number of thankas, various images of Buddha and frescoes including the famous "Wheel of Life".

 

Day 03: Leh- Spituk to Zingchen 3700m
Trek begins along an dirt jeep road on very dry and exposed land, after 3 hours the landscape becomes greener into the Zingchen Valley where the Rumbak River flows into the Indus. Camp is in the small village of Zingchen, which means 'big field', where there are just two houses. The rest of the day will be spent enjoying the view and maybe even enjoy a cool dip in the river! Camping in tents.

 

Day 04: Zingchen to Rumbak 3900m
The trail enters Hemis National Park, home to the famous Snow Leopard, Blue Sheep, Ladakhi Urial a species of goat, great Tibetan sheep “Arghali”, red fox, Tibetan wolf, wild dog “dhole”, Lynx, marmot and mountain hare. Trail starts to climb gradually up to village of Rumbak. Camping in tents.

 

Day 05: Rumbak – Stokla – Camp Site
In the morning after breakfast ascend the 4,900m Stok Pass also known as the Namlung La. If fit and having camped at the plateau just under the pass is normal, there should have no problem crossing the pass. A steady climb over the pass is usually less than 1.5hrs. Camping in tents.

 

Day 06: Camp Site – Stok – Leh
Today is an easy day going downhill all the way. Follow the stream on its left bank as it heads north. The path is broad and easy coming across willows and wild roses growing on islands in the middle of the stream which grows quite wide closer to Stok. Visit the Stok Palace, residence of the king of Ladakh.  Overnight in hotel.

 

Day 07 : Leh – Pangong Lake

Early breakfast drive for a visit of Pangong Lake via Chang La pass 5,225m. The drive is through amazing scenery with breathtaking views of the snowcapped mountains . The Lake is the highest 4267m salt-water lake in the world, situated along the India-China border. It is about 130 Km long and 5-6 Km wide. The Chang -Chenmo range surrounding it from the north provide a spectacular backdrop to the blue and green expanse of its brackish water. Overnight Camp.

 

Day 08 :Pangong Lake – Leh

Breakfast at the camp and spend the morning exploring the area. Return to Leh by the evening. Overnight in hotel.

 

Day 09 : Leh rest day

Day free for personal activities and exploring. Overnight in hotel.

 

Day 10 : Leh - Delhi

Transfer to airport to catch the flight for Delhi.
