Come every October, walnut growers in Laishui town, Hebei province of China are busy sorting and putting up their best harvest in richly decorated boxes to droves of buyers that arrive here to buy what is considered an unique collectors' item. They buy not for the edible kernel but instead value its ridged brown shell. Rolling a pair of walnuts between palm and fingers are believed to improve blood circulation, stimulates brain capacity and has been a pastime for hundreds of years.
Walnuts were used as toys in China's imperial courts as far back as 220A.D. and championed by officials during the Qing Dynasty 1644 - 1912 and been a status symbol exchanged among the country's elite ever since. Laishui walnut orchards have a reputation of being most lucrative for their owners earning handsome returns.
Globes which are most symmetrical are valued more than gold by collectors who use it for hand massages. Prized pairs sell for as much as US$30,000. Larger size, the more symmetrical pits and ridges, deeper brown color are most expensive.
