Country : Bhutan

Type : Making News

The Zhemgang Bird Festival was held on 13 to 15 <span 13px;"="">November, 2023; the usually quiet town of Tingtibi was bustling with domestic and visitors alike after a 3 years gap to commemorate the Birth Anniversary of His Majesty The Fourth Druk Gyalpo Jigme Singye Wangchuk. The ZBF begins with the end of Black Necked Crane Festival held in Gangtey.

For bird watching enthusiasts, it was a great way to combine the Gangtey Crane Festival with the Zhemgang Bird Festival with a cultural and wildlife experience.

The main event a birdathon is a birding expedition with more than 30 national birders engaged in a vigorous bird watching spree of the area.  Zhemgang dzongkhag is home to more than 500 species of birds and the festival is being held at Tingtibi, an area much sought after by bird watchers from across the world.

Among the bird species; are the critically endangered white-bellied heron and four species of hornbill – Great Hornbill, Rufous-necked Hornbill, Wreathed Hornbill and the Pied Hornbill. The beautiful Nuthatch is also occasionally sighted in the upper regions of the dzongkhag.

The area is also known to be a good spot for river rafting on the Mangdechu river and locally grown delicacy yam.  And a great spot for fly fishing.

Just a drive of approximately 4 hrs from Trongsa, parts of the dzongkhag falls in the Manas National Park.

Book a tour to this bird watching paradise and enjoy a trip off the beaten trail in Bhutan.
