China announced unilateral visa-free policy to more countries on a trial basis by extending visa-free facility to travelers holding ordinary passports from six countries; France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Malaysia. The visa-free scheme will begin from December 1, 2023 to November 30, 2024, nationals from these countries holding ordinary passports can be exempted from visa to enter China and stay for a period of not more than 15 days for business, tourism, family visit and transit purposes.

Currently, most travellers need a visa to enter China with the exception of citizens of Singapore and Brunei, who do no require visa to enter China for business, tourism, family visits and transit for no more than 15 days.  Earlier in November 2023, China expanded its visa-free transit policy to 54 countries to include citizens of Norway.

Since March 2023 China began issuing all types of visas again. Tens of millions of international tourists visited China each year prior to the pandemic.
