Heritage Sites post Earthquake have been rebuilt - since the earthquake of 25th April, 2015, almost all monuments in the Heritage areas within Kathmandu valley have undergone repairs and restorations. Only few in the Kathmandu Durbar Square, Patan and Nuwakot are being given finishing touches and visitors can view skilled craftsmen using traditional methods to rebuild monuments and structures supervised by the Department of Archaeology.
The Kathmandu Durbar Square built in 723 AD is the area bustling with numerous monuments. They include the not to be missed Kumari Ghar, residence of the Living Goddess, Machchhendranath temple worshipped by Buddhists and Hindus alike, Kal Bhairab the fierce protector deity, historic squares with ancient monuments of the former palace of Shah kings are some of the highlights of this bustling square.
Swayambhunath, also known as the "monkey temple" is believed to be a stupa over 2000 years old and is located atop a ridge overlooking the city. The National Museum with its splendid collection of weapons, artefacts from ancient, medieval and modern Nepal.
Pashupatinath the holiest Hindu temple in the world. It is here that the mortal remains of Hindus are consigned to the flames. Bodhnath the largest Buddhist stupa in the country, is where most of the Tibetan community have settled. They brought skills of carpet weaving industry to Nepal and devout Buddhist faith through a profusion of monasteries.
CULTURAL TOURS IN PATAN
Patan the twin city of Kathmandu also an ancient city is well known for its craftsmen and metal workers who have carved some of the most exquisite bronze objects. The Krishna temple, Patan palace, terracotta temple of the Thousand Buddhas and many intriguing objects of architecture abound. The Jawalakhel Tibetan Carpet weaving centre is a great place to observe traditional hand made carpets weaving techniques.
Or take a short drive to visit the Royal Botanical Garden to Godavari at the foothill of Phulchowki, famous for varieties of rhododendrons, claredendrons and exotic species of fern and birdlife.
CULTURAL TOURS OUTSKIRTS OF KATHMANDU VALLEY
No other medieval city compares with Bhaktapur also known as the "city of devotees". Its exquisite architecture inspired the pagoda shapes that are now found throughout Asia. The Durbar Square with its huge lion guardians; the five storey pagoda-Nyatapola temple the 14th century Dattatraya temple; the Palace of the 55 Windows built by King Bhupatindra Malla and the fine Peacock Window are some of the object d'art in this living museum. Potters use traditional methods to make clay objects and papier mache to create masks of gods and demons.
Close by is the Changu Narayan temple situated on a ridge overlooking Bhaktapur which has perhaps the oldest stone carvings of the Licchavi era found in Nepal. Its origins go back to the 4th century.
Panauti, one of the finest of all Newari settlements has the three tiered Indreshwar Mahadev temple built at the beginning of the 15th century and the Narayan Shrine. Across the Pungamati river stands the famous 17th century Brahmayani Temple.
Bungamati village abode of the revered deity Rato "Red" Machhendranath unfortunately suffered big damages and reconstruction works are ongoing. It is the site of the annual Rato or Red Machhendranath chariot festival. The wood carvers of Bungamati are among the best in the country.
